Spirit Awards—Type design, storyboarding, branding, and motion graphics at Pentagram for the 2018 Film Independent Spirit Awards, an event celebrating the year’s best independent films, filmmakers, and actors.
Our team worked under the creative direction of Emily Oberman to develop the show's visual identity, storyboard category animations, and execute the show's print ephemera, stage design, and broadcast graphics.
Typographic patterns were fully integrated into every aspect of the event, creating an immersive environment of trippy, hypnotic repetitions and color mapped into three-dimensional landscapes. This was amplified by the set design, which was built of patterns of linked and concentric circles and radial lines––the pair of enormous circular screens on stage appeared to transform with the type, physically expanding and receding into the space, for a trompe l’oeil effect.
A career highlight: in his acceptance speech for Best Director, Jordan Peele commented on the show design, telling the audience “I am so honored receiving this award here onstage on this Wakandan laundromat that you see before you.”
Created at Pentagram under partner/creative director Emily Oberman with associate partner Todd Goldstein, designers Efrén Pagán and Laura Berglund, project manager Anna Meixler, and animator James Zanoni in Winter 2017-2018.
